Do Your Brakes Need to be Inspected?

“When it comes to vehicle safety, the brake system is at the top of the list, so have your brakes checked by an auto service professional at least once a year,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.”

The Car Care Council recommends that motorists watch for seven signs that their brakes need to be inspected:

Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.
Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking.
Low Pedal: brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.
Hard Pedal: must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.
Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.
Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.
Light: brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.

Is your vehicle exhibiting any of these signs?

Does the Brand of Gas You Use Matter?

Many car owners have wondered to themselves on occasion "Does the Brand of Gas I Use Matter?"

We're here to tell you that the answer is yes. The reason being that some brands contain more detergent additives that can prevent carbon deposits from forming inside your engine.

These are the so-called Top Tier brands that use considerably more detergent additives than is required by the EPA. Several vehicle manufacturers recommend using Top Tier gas so they and their dealers don't receive complaints from owners about poor performance or fuel economy caused by carbon deposits, fouled fuel injectors or other issues.

Most major oil companies have adopted the voluntary Top Tier standards for detergent additives, including Shell, ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, Phillips 66, Texaco and Valero, among others.

The vehicle manufacturers claim that using other brands of gas over time can allow carbon deposits to form in combustion chambers, which can cause engine knock or pinging (premature fuel ignition), and on intake valves, which can impede valve operation.

This doesn't mean you should never use anything except Top Tier gas, although using Top Tier gas as often as is practical and economically feasible is a helpful. If you choose to use other types of gas in your vehicle, periodically adding a fuel system cleaner should do the trick.
