Necessary Items
To do the job on your own, it is important to gather these supplies:
- Ratchet extensions
- Spark plug socket
- 3/8 inch ratchet
- Spark plug gap gauge
- 3/8 inch swivel socket
- Compressed air canister
Process
It is important to only work on your car when the engine is cold; if it was recently on, then you risk burning yourself. You should also double check that you have purchased the correct spark plugs or consult your owner’s manual.
Put on eyegear to protect your eyes from dirt and any possible debris. To remove the old plug, tug on it with a left to right twisting motion. It helps to only work on one at a time to not confuse yourself. You will match the spark plug to its correct wire.
Take the compressed air canister to clean the spark plug, so you can attach a new one without keeping old gunk.
Take your spark plug ratchet and unwind the plug. Going counterclockwise is key. When it is loose, tug left and right with your hand.
You should now look at your vehicle owner’s manual to see the right gap gauge. Use your spark plug gap gauge to create the right gap. Insert the tool to the bottom of the spark plug and the hook.
You’re now ready to put in the fresh spark plug, so make sure that there is no dirt in the area.
Insert (screw) the spark plug with your hand, and secure it with the ratchet.
Go ahead and connect (twist) the spark plug with the appropriate plug wire. A click will let you know you did it right.
