Kia Driverless Cars Are Becoming Reality

Kia is on track to introduce partially driverless cars by 2020 and bring totally autonomous cars to market by 2030. The company’s development of driverless cars got a big boost recently when the state of Nevada licensed the automaker to test autonomous driving technologies on public roads. Kia is investing $2 billion in a partnership with Hyundai to bring safe, reliable driverless technology and next-generation smart vehicles to fruition. Today is just the beginning of major changes in the way we drive.

Introducing Partially Driverless Cars by 2020

Kia is beginning testing of driverless features including Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Stop System, and Autonomous Valet Parking, all of which will provide convenience and safety for drivers. Kia will also be innovating and testing autonomous driving systems for highway and urban areas. This is probably what you picture when you hear the words, “driverless car.” These intelligent systems build upon existing safety features designed to automatically alert drivers to road hazards and help them safely react. All of these advanced new technologies will offer drivers access to controls and the ability to override the systems if necessary. Kia plans to complete testing and introduce partially-autonomous cars by 2020.

Fully Autonomous Cars Within Reach by 2030

Testing and improvements are the first step in Kia’s long range plan, which targets 2030 for developing these features into a fully automated vehicle and bringing it to market. A major initiative for research and development will focus on enabling vehicle communication. In order for cars to truly drive themselves, they will need to be able to communicate with each other and intelligently respond to their surroundings and obstacles on the road. The next several years will be crucial for testing and public acceptance of these automated technologies and the results they deliver.
