Selection Process
The Must Test Drive list is a unique, consumer-focused award, and the process of compiling the list is long and arduous. Autotrader limits the list to ten vehicles that must be available for purchase at the time the list is released, and the editorial team has to agree unanimously on each selection. First of all, the vehicles included must have a base starting price of less than $75,000 and score at least a four on the five-point scale that evaluates overall value. The categories include interior quality, exterior design, quality of ride, technology features, and cargo space. The editors are looking for cars that offer a strong value proposition – high quality for a competitive price.
More importantly, Autotrader looks for vehicles that offer something unexpected, things that surprise people and change the way they feel about the car and brand. After driving thousands of miles and testing hundreds of vehicles, the Autotrader staff would mull over the questions, “Is this car unexpectedly good, would it be time well-spent for a shopper to go out and test drive this car before making their final decision?”
