2016 Kia Optima Earns Top Safety Pick+ Rating

The all-new2016 Kia Optima has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) prestigious Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with the Autonomous Emergency Braking option. Not only is the Optima Kia’s best-selling nameplate, but it’s also the first Kia ever to earn this designation level from the IIHS.

Top Safety Pick+ Requirements

Receiving a Top Safety Pick+ designation is no simple feat. Vehicles undergo a series of five crashworthiness evaluations, including tests for side impact, small overlap front, moderate overlap front, head restraints, and roof strength. Vehicles must earn a “GOOD” rating in each and score an “ADVANCED” or “SUPERIOR” rating for front crash prevention. Models that earn a Top Safety Pick+ distinction represent the safest vehicle choices within their size categories.

Safety Elements

Safety is a top priority for the Kia brand, and the 2016 Optima reflects that with its considerable number of active safety technologies and conventional safety features. The Optima contains a comprehensive airbag system, four-wheel antilock brakes, Brake Assist, and Electronic Stability Control. A rear-camera display comes standard, and a 360-degree Surround-View Monitor is available on the SX and SXL trims for enhanced visibility. Powerful driver-aid capabilities are available as well, including Front Collision Warning System, Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Rear Parking Assist System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Lane Departure Warning System. The available Autonomous Emergency Braking intervenes on the driver’s behalf to quickly slow it to a stop, if necessary, to help avoid potential collisions and minimize damage. This is the feature that was awarded a “SUPERIOR” rating on the 2016 Optima.

The 2016 Optima

The Optima has been an extremely successful model for Kia. Thanks to the vision of Kia’s president and chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, the 2016 Optima has a modern, athletic style and consistent design elements. The new version has a longer, wider, and stiffer chassis that gives it more flexible handling and an improved ride. Under the hood, a new 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine married to a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission is now available. The new Optima features a more spacious cabin and a more luxurious level of materials and interior accents. The 2016 Optima comes in five trims – LX, LX 1.6T, EX, SX, and SXL.
