Criteria
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests vehicle safety to help consumers make more informed decisions. Families and concerned drivers rely on the IIHS for trusted reviews.
In order for a model to earn the Top Safety Pick Plus rating, it has to go through five crash tests and have a “Good” rating in each. These tests look for roof integrity and head restraints, small overlap front, side impact crashworthiness, and front crash prevention. For crash prevention, the vehicle must achieve a “Superior” or
“Advanced” score.
Driver Assistance Features
The 2017 Kia Sorento has an array of driver assistance options that can be added.
On the LX and higher, drivers can choose to add a back-up warning system that will tell you if you get too close to an object. There is also an optional Forward Collision Warning system that uses sensors on the front end of the vehicle. It detects when motion and activity are happening in front of your car to determine the likelihood of a crash. It delivers visual and audible alerts to give you enough reaction time.
Starting with the LX V6 trim, drivers have the option for Blind Spot Detection System and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. With Blind Spot Detection, you receive a warning when you have the turn signal on and a vehicle enters your blind spot. If you are merging where there is a vehicle in unsafe proximity, then the system warns you not to merge just yet. Rear Cross Traffic Alert knows when there is motion behind the car while you are slowly reversing, preventing potential collisions.
Vehicle Construction
The Sorento is designed to be rigid for better handling and safety. It is constructed from high strength steel that composes over 53 percent of the body. Additionally, the use of industrial adhesives provides incredible support.
